flats

The first photo was taken just before sunrise on the Govert van WIjnkade in Maassluis. These are old warehouses, or pakuizen. This type of warehouse first appeared in The Netherlands around 1600, and were used primarily for the loading and unloading of ships, and storage of those goods. Most still have the cranes at the top of the warehouses that were used to lift the goods in and out of the building. The second photo was taken on the Industrieweg in Maassluis, with private houses and buisnesses visible behind the camper storage. The third photo features the Merellaan No. 1, a flat, bathed in the cold morning sun.

dec25-103.JPG pigeon haven

I took my camera downtown early Christmas morning, and found hardly a soul in sight.

Save for the lone pigeon in the middle photo, the streets were almost completely desolate. Most shops were closed, and though that isn’t a hinderance, it is something that still takes some getting used to for me.

waterway ship haven

The first image was taken on a foggy, cold morning on the ferry landing in Maassluis. The second image shows a small ship leaving the haven between Maassluis and Rozenburg late afternoon. Since Maassluis is basically a gateway to The Port of Rotterdam, one of the world’s busiest port, the waterway is busy, so to speak. The last image is of the ship, “Furie“, early morning in the haven of Maassluis. The ships here are decorated with white lights during the Christmas season.

Bundi Gala Kissy

Meet Bundi. She’s enjoying a relaxing afternoon in her garden. She’s retired. Then there’s Gala. She was rescued while her adopted family was vacationing in Spain. She’s probably cold in Holland. And, last but not least, Kissy, the Queen of the Steendijk Polder. She has the face of an angel, and rules with an iron fist.

Storm over a field Vierstraat

The first picture shows an incomming storm over a  field that lies between Maasluis and neighboring Vlaardingen. The second image shows rooftops of both businesses and private homes that line the “Vierstraat” in downtown Maasluis.
